Episode 359: Grant vs the Volcano

Grant’s at home when he should be in Bali thanks to the ash cloud from Mt Raung so it’s time to do an OzDesk. The boys talk briefly about flights resuming to Bali.

They also talk about the fun they had doing commentary at the Hunter Valley Airshow last weekend despite Grant losing his voice :)

Episode 353: Can Qantas Restore its Credit Rating AND get 787-9s?

It’s the Queens Birthday long weekend here in Australia and while the boys didn’t get any recognition from Her Majesty, some of their friends & guests of Plane Crazy Down Under did as Chris Sperou & Dave Jacka both get Order of Australia Medals and Dick Smith gets upgraded to Companion of the Order of Australia. Yay! :)

Meanwhile, Qantas is saying it can make the investments required to return its investment grade credit rating while also being able to convert its 787-9 options into firm orders. Meanwhile, others question whether this will be possible.

To rub salt into Qantas’ wounds, Etihad have started flying their 787-9s into Brisbane and have upgraded their Sydney flights to A380s.

Out in the regions, CASA has proposed allowing non-Air Traffic Controllers to operate Unicom services after having to back down from their previous statements that Unicoms in the USA do not provide traffic information services. Civil Air (the union for Air Traffic Controllers) is objecting to this as they believe Unicom services can only be provided by people who’ve held an ATC certificate within the previous 10 years.

Episode 352: Sabotage by Cabotage

The federal government are contemplating a proposal to allow foreign airlines carry domestic passengers between locations north of the Tropic of Capricorn (eg: Cairns, Darwin, Townsville, etc). So, can a reduction in cabotage restrictions in the north end lead to sabotage of domestic operations? Just for a change, the unions, the airlines and many others are all aligning to tell the government that their idea sucks! Virgin Australia’s CEO John Borghetti has waded into the battle with a stark warning.

Meanwhile, over the weekend Grant stayed up late to watch Matt Hall come in third in the Red Bull Air Race at Rovinj in Croatia. After appearing to be knocked out of the running by Nigel Lamb during the Round of 14, Matt was able to get into the Round of 8 by being the “fastest loser” at which point he flew the fastest time of the day through the track, putting the pressure on Paul Bonhomme who made one critical error & got disqualified. From there it was on to the Final 4 where Matt flew well but couldn’t pip out Hannes Arch & Martin Sonka. We play a few excerpts from the coverage that were supplied supplied by the Red Bull Radio Service.

Finally we wrap up with a couple of quick stories about the RAAF:

Episode 350: It’s just the gas, man

The boys are back with the sad news that the Wings Over Illawarra air show show had to be cancelled due to terrible weather. Bummer :(

Deciding to go with military stories, we open with the news that RAAF KC30As are dry plugging their booms off the coast of Brisbane recently. Although no gas was passed (that’s going to happen soon) it verifies that the boom is finally all but working!

Next we down-scale a little and report that SQNLDR Andrew ‘Jacko’ Jackson has flown the RAAF’s first F35. He became the first Australian to fly an F35 last month but now he’s at Luke AFB and flying A35-001 (our first RAAF F35). Apparently the kangaroo painted on the side makes all the difference :)

To wrap up, we celebrate Matt Hall taking 2nd place at the Chiba (Japan) leg of the Red Bull Air Race. YAY! We also note that he’s looking for major sponsor so we figured “Hey, why not Rob Mark’s CommAvia???” :)
