Episode 309: First F35s and Qantas goes Back to the Future

Steve’s very happy this week & not just because Matt Hall came 3rd in Poland: Steve’s been flying!

Meanwhile, the first two RAAF F-35s are unveiled in Texas in two separate events and Qantas are once again considering splitting their International & Domestic arms as the proposed changes to the Qantas Sale Act just aren’t enough in their eyes.

Episode 308: A Centenary of Australian Air Mail

Steve & Grant are joined by their friend Owen Zupp who has recently finished re-enacting the first airmail flight in Australia to help celebrate its centenary. He’s also recently launched a new website called The Pilots Blog, seen great traffic from his new book Fifty More Tales of Flight, been in France with the new A350 and been busy with way more exciting aviation related activities than we have time to cover.

Episode 307: Air New Zealand

The boys are back and they’re trying to remember how to make an AusDesk. Fortunately they remember how to do it and can tell us about Air New Zealand’s new 787-9 arriving in Auckland and the customised Zodiac seats in Economy class. They also talk about Australia’s Defence Science Technology Organisation being commissioned to produce the F35 ‘Iron Bird’ test unit.

Episode 306: Taxing Travels

No AusDesk for this episode as Steve was buried in end-of-financial-year tax preparations and Grant’s out flying hot air balloons in rural Victoria.

Episode 305: Steve’s solo but maintains the Flight of Solidarity with Alex Fisher

The southern winter weather has taken its toll on Grant this week, so Steve flies the segment solo. In the news, the constant doom & gloom surrounding aviation maintenance job losses was brightened slightly with the announcement by Air New Zealand & Etihad of an agreement to use each other’s line facilities in Melbourne and Los Angeles. In a boost for Melbourne, Etihad’s local line maintenance facility will service Air New Zealand aircraft. In return, their aircraft will be serviced in LA at Air New Zealand’s facility.

In an era where QANTAS continues to claim that Australian aircraft maintenance is not viable, Etihad has shown that the opposite can be the case. It also operates a line maintenance facility in Sydney.

Steve also catches up with 17 year old Alex Fisher as he continues his Flight of Solidarity around Australia in a Cessna 172, raising awareness of – and funds for – the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Last week we caught up with Alex at Weipa in the north and this week we find him in Perth, Western Australia. While he’s made it through about half of the distance around Australia, some of his biggest challenges are ahead of him as the winter weather comes rolling through the south of the country.

Episode 304: Alex Fisher is Flying Around Australia

This week the boys are back and they’re chatting with Alex Fisher, a 17 year old who is currently flying solo around Australia to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and become the youngest person to circumnavigate Australia solo by aircraft in the process.

Alex has named his project “Flight of Solidarity” (www.flightofsolidarity.com.au) and thanks to sponsorship from Spidertracks, you can track his progress on the “Alex’s Location page” of the website.

On the home page of his site you can also find bank details to help fund his flight, a link to make a donation to the RFDS and a link to his Flight Details page where you can see his planned route.

When we caught up with Alex, he was over-nighting in Weipa after the 3rd day of his two week journey. We spoke briefly about what inspired him to do the project, how long he’s been flying, the help he’s received and his sponsors.

Episode 303: Couldn’t make it to Become A Pilot Day

This episode saw the Airplane Geeks on site at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum for the Become a Pilot Day. Unfortunately, our frequent flyer points wouldn’t stretch far enough to get us across the Pacific to be there, so we sat this episode out.

Episode 302: Airspace, Negotiations and Regulations (plus an F35 or two)

Grant’s sulking because Max forgot his name last week* and it takes all Steve’s producer skills (and a few beers) to get him back into the groove. Once that’s achieved, it’s on with the show:

One final item is a gratuitous plug for our latest episode of the Plane Crazy Down Under show, where we spend a lot of time going into some depth on the F35 and effort required to bring it online with the RAAF. It’s getting great reviews and if you want to hear lots of juicy info on the F35, the helmet, how the aircraft is best used and what’s involved in bringing such new technology into the RAAF, this is the one for you :)

* Listen to the blooper at the end of Episode 301 to hear Max forget Grant’s name. Ooops :)

Episode 301: Our Day Jobs ate the Aus Desk :(

Sorry folks, Steve’s off driving trains and Grant’s work is driving him crazy with regulatory compliance matters. No time for an AusDesk this week but we’ll be back next week, honest :)

Episode 300: Back to Qantas and the F35

Congratulations all round for the Airplane Geeks team as they’ve hit 300 episodes and “Woo hoo” to us too as we’ve been along for a big chunk of the ride too. Of course, given all the re-takes we’ve done and the “themed” AusDesk episodes we produced, it feels like we’ve done well over 300 Australia Desk segments already :)

In amongst all of this, we take you back to Qantas as, after all, it’s been a couple of months since we last talked about them and they’ve not gone away yet (well, not entirely :)

Then, for a change of pace, we talk about the latest announcement from the Australian Defence Minister that the Australian Government are considering the purchase of the F35B STOVL variant of the F35. This is in addition to the 72 F35As already confirmed.

Finally, we round out by chatting about Hobart’s runway being upgraded so that it can handle A330’s & 777’s, allowing international flights from Asia to operate directly to our southern-most capital city.
