Episode 222: Alliances are cool but retro may be making a comeback

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year once again & we’re about to run the same ol’ report (& gags) for the 4th time in a row!

Yes, that’s right, it’s the Qantas AGM where:

  • Shareholders are unhappy
  • Profits are down
  • Domestic doing well
  • Market share is falling
  • Everyone loves Jetstar
  • No dividend for shareholders & no bonus for Alan Joyce

So, moving on to other news, it’s all about Virgin Australia:

  • Virgin Australia buys 60% of Tiger Airways Australia while also buying all of SkyWest but meanwhile Singapore buys 10% of Virgin Australia
  • All Virgin Australia flights to use “Velocity” as their call sign while the IATA code will be VOZ
  • Meanwhile, Alan Joyce at Qantas says that whatever happens, he’s still confident that Qantas will stay on top

Meanwhile, Air New Zealand‘s got some huge news that Grant tries to guess, including:

  • Their super viral Hobbit themed safety video: An Unexpected Briefing
  • The 80’s revival via their “Night Rider” discounted red-eye flights
  • The breaking news that Air New Zealand are entering into an alliance with Cathay Pacific (yes, that’s the big news alright)
